About

Why the Nor'easter Rugby Cup Exists

The Nor'easter Rugby Cup was created to address a persistent gap in New England collegiate XVs rugby, particularly for small-college programs.

For many of these programs, the competitive calendar is compressed. Fall seasons are short, rosters are developing, and opportunities to give players meaningful match time are limited. In the spring, competition is often fragmented. Matches are cancelled, schedules shift late, travel becomes inefficient, and teams struggle to secure consistent, well-run fixtures.

At the same time, small-college programs are frequently grouped into broader competitive structures that favor larger schools with deeper rosters, especially in short-format competitions. That imbalance makes it difficult for developing programs to field competitive sides and provide the playing time their athletes need.

The Nor'easter Rugby Cup was built to solve these problems directly. It delivers a structured spring XVs series with guaranteed matches, centralized operations, and governance aligned with NCR Rugby. The goal is straightforward: competitive rugby that prioritizes player development, safety, and consistency while giving programs a predictable framework they can plan around.

This is not a replacement for conference play or postseason competition. It is a focused spring series designed to complement existing pathways, extend the competitive season, and raise the standard of regional rugby for small-college programs.

Mission & Principles

The Nor'easter Rugby Cup is guided by a few core principles:

  • Guaranteed, competitive fixtures for all participating teams
  • Centralized officiating and certified medical coverage on every field
  • Alignment with NCR Rugby governance standards
  • Operational discipline that respects student-athletes, coaches, and administrators

WIT Rugby

Ward Spangenberg founded the Nor'easter Rugby Cup to give New England small-college programs the kind of competition he wished existed while building teams himself.

As a collegiate coach, Ward saw how inconsistent scheduling, late cancellations, and structural mismatches limited player development. He also watched too many capable athletes lose meaningful playing opportunities when spring options narrowed to formats that didn't fit their teams. Rather than accept that as normal, he focused on building a better alternative.

The Nor'easter Cup reflects a simple philosophy: good rugby doesn't happen by accident. It requires planning, accountability, and people willing to do the unglamorous work that makes competition reliable, fair, and worth committing to.

Advisory Board

The Nor'easter Rugby Cup is supported by an advisory board drawn from across New England rugby, providing oversight, experience, and regional perspective.
